The mission of Loving Heart Animal Shelter is to rescue healthy and treatable dogs and cats in our community and provide them with the loving and care they need to find permanent homes.
For over ten years, Loving Heart Animal Shelter has been saving the lives of dogs and cats in the city of Lafayette, Indiana. LHAS is a no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization that has provided a wide variety of pets with a temporary place to call home. Thanks to the endless efforts of our staff, foster parents, and volunteers, over 6,000 pets have found love and comfort with adoptive families since we first started.
In 2009, Loving Heart was founded by Sandy Fogarasi and her animal-loving friends. Although some faces have changed throughout the years and LHAS has obtained a building, the heart of our mission has remained the same.
"There have been so many dogs over the years that have touched my heart... I will never forget any of them and where they are now, all because Loving Heart gave them a chance at life and love." - Sandy Fogarasi
I am an animal-lover from long ago. When I was a kid I would try to save every baby bunny or hug every stray dog I met. That passion to be kind and loving to animals carried over into adulthood.
My first dog, Brandon the golden retriever, was with me for over fifteen years. When I lost him in 2006, I decided to start volunteering at the local shelter. This is where I got my first experience of life and death in animal shelters, and I knew that I could and wanted to do something about it.
With the help of a few friends, I started Loving Heart Animal Shelter in 2009. Although nearly ten years have gone by and some faces have changed, we continue to have the same goal: Make Loving Heart great and have a place to for all homeless pets to call home. There have been so many dogs over the years that have touched my heart and made me who I am today. I will never forget any of them and where they are now, all because Loving Heart gave them a chance at life and love.
Born and raised in Lafayette, I have always been the token "animal lover" but never knew the true realities. After graduating from Purdue, I worked full time with Hallmark Home Mortgage as a Loan Officer and a Director with Scentsy, both of which I am extremely passionate about and loved. However, I was missing the last piece... And I found that with Loving Heart Animal Shelter.
I joined LHAS in January of 2012 and am Head of Fundraising and Events. I now feel complete, knowing that we are truly making a difference in the lives of animals that may have had no other choice.
I have two girls and one boy of my own - four- legged that is! Sophia is my 5 year old Brindle Bombshell Mixed Breed. Khloe, a Rottweiler mix with one blue eye and one half blue eye (a bit creepy in the dark!) is my LHAS foster failure. And last but not least is my baby boy Chance, another Loving Heart foster failure. Chance most definitely chose us and is loving life with his two fur "sisters."
Loving Heart has blessed me in so many ways. I have met people that I don't think I could ever live without in my life, and I am able to help animals in a way that fills my heart. (Plus, I was able to adopt my Ko-Ko Khloe and Chanceria Pizzeria!)
Patty is a lifelong lover of all things "animal." Raised on a mini farm outside Thorntown, Indiana, Patti grew up surrounded by horses, dogs, and cats. She has four sons - the youngest is a Purdue student and the three others are grown and carrying on in the love of animals. Patty also has one amazing daughter-in-law and a beautiful granddaughter.
Patty and her husband, Scott, live in West Lafayette, where they enjoy gardening and walking trails with Geddy, their pit/boxer/greyhound mix. Geddy rescued the family in December 2017 and has since become a much-loved and pampered member of the Will family.
Volunteer/Head of Foster Homes and Adoption Home-Visits
I have loved animals for as long as I can remember; and when I was a young adult, I earned the nickname "The Dog Whisperer." Now, I live with my two teenage daughters and three wonderful rescue dogs from Loving Heart Animal Shelter. I am a part-time Certified Massage Therapist, part-time substitute teacher, and full-time animal lover.
However, as I have grown older, I felt a need to do more. Understanding the horrific lives that neglected, abused, and abandoned animals endure brought me to the great team of people at Loving Heart. They are truly making a change for animals in need.
I was both thrilled and humbled to join the Board of Directors in 2015. I know we will continue to make a difference - all it takes is love, hope, and action.
Volunteer/Medical Transportation/Adoption Counselor
When I first started volunteering at Loving Heart, I was a foster parent, opening my home to pets in need of a safe place to stay. As LHAS grew so did my desire to become more involved. Now I am a part-time adoption counselor, and I transport animals from the shelter to their appointments at the vet.
After my two childhood dogs passed away, I chose to start volunteering at Loving Heart in 2018. I am a sophomore at Purdue University majoring in Theatre Design and Production. Sadly, I don't have any animals currently, but when the time is right, I will adopt from a shelter. I will always be an animal lover. The dogs and cats at LHAS have my heart.
My jobs as a volunteer include animal care, playing with dogs, laundry, maintenance of fenced-in areas, showing potential adopters to our current animals, and event helper. The most rewarding part of being a volunteer at Loving Heart is to see dogs and cats being adopted by loving community residents.
Animals, especially dogs and cats in shelters, have always held a special place in my heart. I have had the privilege of volunteering at Loving Heart since 2015, and it has been an amazing growing and learning experience for me.
My jobs as a volunteer include animal care, photography/occasional videography, processing intakes and adoptions, and website management/promotion of adoptable animals. For me, the best part about being a volunteer is welcoming new animals to the shelter and seeing long-term residents find loving, forever homes.
It has been great being part of Loving Heart these past three and a half years, and I can't wait to see where Loving Heart will be going in the future!
